WEEK 1 preview:
The Foundation (Basic Commands & Bonding)
✅ Day 1: Name Recognition & Focus
Goal: Teach your dog to recognize their name and focus on you when called.
How to Do It:
Get your dog’s attention by saying their name in a happy, upbeat tone.
The moment they look at you, immediately reward them with a treat and praise (“Good job!”).
Repeat this 10 times in short sessions throughout the day.
Gradually increase distractions as they improve.
If Your Dog Isn’t Responding:
🔴 They ignore their name: Try using a higher-value treat (chicken, cheese, etc.).
🔴 They get distracted easily: Start in a quiet environment before practicing in busier areas.
🔴 They still don’t respond: Make an exciting noise (kissy sound, whistle) right before saying their name. Reward immediately when they look.
✅ Day 2: Sit Command
Goal: Teach your dog to sit on command.
How to Do It:
Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose and slowly move it upward. Their butt should naturally lower.
The moment they sit, say “Sit”, then reward and praise.
Repeat 5-10 times per session.
Once they consistently respond, start fading the treat lure and use just the verbal cue.
If Your Dog Isn’t Sitting:
🔴 They keep jumping instead: Move the treat slower so they don’t leap for it.
🔴 They back away: Try practicing against a wall so they can’t step back.
🔴 They don’t sit at all: Gently guide their butt down while saying “Sit,” then reward.
✅ Day 3: Down Command
Goal: Teach your dog to lie down on command.
How to Do It:
Start with your dog in a sitting position.
Hold a treat near their nose, then slowly lower it to the floor between their paws.
As they follow the treat down, say “Down”, then reward and praise when they lie down.
If they struggle, lure them under a low object (like a chair) to encourage lying down.
If Your Dog Isn’t Lying Down:
🔴 They just stare at the treat: Move it slower and be more patient.
🔴 They keep standing up: Hold the treat close to their chest before moving downward.
🔴 They won’t budge: Try rewarding them for any lowering motion (like bending their elbows), then build up to a full down.
encourage them.
